when we constantly almost applaud the
0:03
fact that i’m just too picky i’m just my
0:06
problem is i’m too picky if we’re not
0:09
careful
0:10
it becomes another way of saying
0:13
i’m
0:14
kind of a judgmental [ __ ]

0:20
well it’s interesting steve there is an
0:22
article on the bbc that talks about the
0:26
idea that people aren’t actually as
0:28
picky in reality
0:30
as they think they are
0:33
when describing
0:34
who they would date research shows
0:37
hidden biases
0:39
mean will actually give people a chance
0:42
even if they don’t quite meet our
0:45
criteria
0:46
right yes and i think that’s interesting
0:48
because
0:49
dating apps no doubt
0:52
make us much more picky than we are in
0:54
reality and i think anyone can kind of
0:56
run this experiment if you
0:58
imagine going on a dating app
1:01
and how you swipe through people so
1:04
liberally in such a
1:07
uh a kind of laissez-faire
1:09
fashion and then
1:11
consider
1:12
how you are if you’re
1:14
a party and someone introduces you to
1:17
someone yeah you’re far more likely
1:20
to give that person that you’ve been
1:22
introduced to in real life
1:24
a moment a chance
1:26
then you are
1:28
on a dating app where that person
1:31
may not even
1:32
[Music]
1:33
make it
1:35
into your i’m going to send them a quick
1:37
high
1:39
folder yeah and it might even be for
1:41
weird reasons like you’ll see one movie
1:43
they said was their favorite movie and
1:45
you’re like oh god really that one like
1:48
or i’ll roll your eyes oh that’s so like
1:50
cliche but if you met someone at a party
1:53
who is great you wouldn’t reject them on
1:55
the basis that their favorite movie
1:58
like made you roll your eyes a bit you
2:00
you’d you’d be like i don’t care like
2:02
this is really fun i’m having a great
2:04
time are they a couple of inches under
2:06
the height that you’ve decided
2:09
you want for yourself
2:11
and that becomes a reason not to choose
2:13
someone and this is the
2:16
that’s what’s really interesting is that
2:18
perfect partners aren’t
2:21
picked in the margins if you met someone
2:25
who is a couple of inches under what you
2:27
thought you wanted your height to be or
2:30
the person’s height to be
2:32
and they ended up being
2:34
so many amazing things in a relationship
2:38
and you had an amazing time with them in
2:39
chemistry and whatever
2:41
the chances
2:43
at that point of you walking away
2:47
because they’re not quite the right
2:48
height or the height that you’d
2:50
predetermined was important
2:52
are
2:53
there
2:55
it’s almost never going to happen or i
2:56
would argue if it does happen
2:59
then you’ve got to start looking inward
3:01
and saying okay what’s happening with me
3:05
that i am treating my love life like a
3:09
thing to be optimized
3:12
[Music]
3:13
instead of finding someone who is
3:16
an amazing partner
3:19
if i find a fantastic partner what’s
3:21
going on with me that i am optimizing
3:24
in this way that i’m still telling
3:26
myself it’s not quite right because they
3:28
don’t have this thing or that thing
3:30
yeah i almost think
3:32
you’re not looking for
3:34
the mistake is to think you’re looking
3:35
for a perfect person
3:37
but you’re actually looking for
3:39
an amazing fit
3:41
someone that fits you really well that
3:44
fits the pieces of your jigsaw really
3:47
well and that’s a very different thing
3:49
one of the phrases this article uses is
3:51
it’s not about the partner you choose
3:54
but the partnership you build
3:57
which i think is
3:59
important
4:00
now i don’t think that you can just
4:02
choose any partner we have to choose a
4:05
partner with the right stuff
4:07
and then
4:09
look at the partnership we’re building
4:11
with them and see if the partnership is
4:13
one that is
4:15
meeting our needs if the partnership is
4:17
one that can make us happy but that’s a
4:20
very different thing from spending our
4:22
whole lives optimizing
4:26
in terms of the partner
4:28
it says here in this article steve maybe
4:30
it’s not that helpful to search and
4:32
search for a partner who looks good on
4:34
paper but it is helpful once dating
4:37
someone to look for early signs that the
4:40
relationship is turning out to be
4:43
healthy and
4:44
supportive
4:46
that
4:47
i think is a real
4:49
shift
4:51
away from
4:53
whether someone meets all of the
4:56
criteria we thought we wanted
4:59
which some of which are hangovers from
5:01
when we were young
5:03
and had this
5:05
shopping list of unimportant things
5:08
that someone had to be and we never
5:10
actually
5:11
revisited that list to see how many of
5:14
them
5:14
were important now i do think that the
5:17
person we come across in life
5:20
that is going to make us happy has to be
5:22
our version of
5:24
special or a version of special that
5:27
really appeals to us but the idea
5:30
that
5:34
we are going to
5:38
objectively
5:40
optimize
5:42
to the point
5:43
where the decision is just made for us
5:47
by fate
5:49
or
5:50
feeling or destiny or whatever you want
5:54
to call it
5:55
is a really really destructive notion
5:59
because it removes agency
6:03
from us as people
6:06
agency is dece in decision making
6:09
whether it’s a person or a career
6:13
or a place you want to live
6:15
agency is saying
6:17
i
6:18
have a role to play
6:22
in
6:23
choosing something and making it
6:26
spectacular
6:30
my job is not to travel the world and
6:32
then when i just
6:35
feel
6:36
this is the place i’m supposed to spend
6:38
the rest of my life
6:40
i settle there
6:43
removes any agency from us
6:46
and it’s making a decision i i think
6:50
this is a very missed
6:51
point in so many things and i’m not the
6:53
first one to say it
6:56
but making a decision
7:00
exercising that agency
7:04
is something that imbues
7:07
a situation with meaning
7:11
that you chose that thing that career
7:14
that place to live that person
7:17
and then decided to go all in on it
7:21
there’s beauty in that that is the thing
7:24
that imbues it with so much meaning but
7:26
so many people go through life
7:29
waiting for life to give them meaning
7:33
i need to find the career that gives me
7:35
purpose
7:37
i need to find the place to live
7:40
that
7:41
just
7:42
speaks to me that is
7:44
that is my place
7:47
that makes me feel good
7:49
i need to find the person that gives my
7:52
life meaning
7:55
but
7:57
that’s to be a kind of a victim
8:00
to meaning
8:02
instead of choosing meaning
8:04
and and
8:05
what could be more meaningful in a world
8:08
where we could have so many potential
8:10
partners
8:12
what could be more meaningful than
8:15
saying i’m choosing
8:18
to build a story
8:20
with
8:21
this person
8:23
this is the story i
8:24
choose and i think that all the
8:27
investment that comes afterwards all of
8:28
the commitment that comes afterwards
8:31
comes as a result of deciding
8:35
that you’re going to make that story
8:38
really important
8:42
that
8:43
commitment is the the inevitable result
8:47
of deciding
8:51
the meaning
8:53
of a story
8:56
as opposed to the result of
9:00
something coming to you pre-ordained
9:02
life doesn’t unfortunately
9:05
i just don’t think life gets to be that
9:08
simple you can be
9:09
so many different things in life
9:12
you could be a fisherman you could be an
9:13
accountant you could be a lawyer
9:15
you could be a speaker you could be a
9:17
writer you could be so many different
9:19
things i don’t think life gets to be as
9:21
simple
9:23
as
9:24
something just chooses you
9:27
we get we go through life and we
9:29
exercise agency
9:32
and the search for a partner
9:34
is no different at a certain point
9:37
we stop
9:39
and it’s not that we stop and we say we
9:42
we just not that we stop on somebody and
9:45
we say
9:46
this is
9:48
good enough
9:51
it’s that we stop on somebody
9:54
and we say
9:55
i’m gonna make this great
9:58
we’re very powerful
10:00
and we have the ability to make things
10:02
great
10:03
in life
10:05
we all have our own magic
10:08
we all have our own ability to make
10:10
things great
10:11
but we have to exercise that ability
10:14
it doesn’t mean that it can be with
10:15
anyone
10:17
we still have to find someone
10:19
who has
10:21
a similar
10:22
attitude towards making a relationship
10:24
great or will be the one doing all the
10:26
work and that doesn’t work
10:29
we still need to find someone with whom
10:31
we have some chemistry
10:34
doesn’t need to be the greatest
10:36
chemistry of all time
10:38
for someone you have chemistry that
10:40
makes it a romantic relationship
10:44
or you have a friendship
10:49
and it still needs to be someone who has
10:51
an outlook on life or values that
10:55
synergize with your own doesn’t have to
10:56
be all the same but they have to be able
10:58
to to be compatible with your own
11:01
but the pool of people that that
11:03
describes
11:06
is far greater
11:09
than the scarcity that people imagine
11:13
is the case
11:16
when they think of trying to find their
11:18
ideal partner
11:20
and i actually fundamentally believe
11:24
that when
11:26
we develop a healthy relationship with
11:29
ourselves and our own flaws
11:32
and when we find ourselves ready for a
11:35
real relationship
11:38
more people become right
11:44
because i do think that when we
11:47
constantly
11:49
applaud almost applaud the fact that i’m
11:52
just too picky i’m just my problem is
11:55
i’m too picky
11:58
it’s kind of
12:00
if we’re not careful
12:03
it becomes another way of saying
12:06
i’m
12:07
kind of a judgmental [ __ ]
12:09
and it’s done under the righteous label
12:11
of i’m too picky
12:13
and i think that we’ve all been through
12:15
those phases
12:17
where we’re incredibly judgmental of
12:18
people and everyone feels wrong for us
12:20
because we’re so judgmental
12:23
yeah everyone loves saying you know when
12:25
you raise your standards in life and
12:27
when you grow and when you read and when
12:30
you do self-development and when you do
12:32
all of these things
12:34
it your pool of people shrinks and it’s
12:37
hard to meet someone who’s on your level
12:39
that’s a really easy easy thing to say
12:41
i’ve even said that in the past
12:44
i think it’s a bit of a cop-out because
12:46
i actually think the more open you
12:49
become as a human being the more you
12:51
accept yourself
12:53
and your own flaws
12:55
and your own history and your own
12:57
weaknesses and don’t see certain things
13:00
with shame
13:01
and disgust when you aren’t disgusted by
13:04
yourself
13:05
and the things that you’ve done or you
13:07
are
13:08
then you start looking at other people
13:11
with less
13:12
disgust with less contempt
13:15
with more openness with more love you
13:18
start actually seeing more good
13:21
in other people when you accept yourself
13:23
more it’s hard not to accept other
13:24
people more and so when we become really
13:27
ready
13:29
more people become right
13:32
what’s up everybody i hope you enjoyed
13:34
the episode today taken from the love
13:37
life podcast i wanted to let you know
13:39
that the things that i was speaking
13:40
about in terms of
13:42
self-acceptance
13:44
and how that changes the way that we
13:46
approach our love lives it changes the
13:48
way that we approach other people
13:50
is a real muscle that we can work on
13:54
if you have struggled in your life to
13:58
love yourself if my god if you’ve
13:59
struggled to like yourself if the idea
14:02
of loving yourself isn’t even on your
14:04
radar because
14:06
you’re struggling to like yourself in
14:08
general if you continuously beat
14:11
yourself up
14:12
over things that you do wrong or things
14:14
you say wrong or mistakes you believe
14:17
you’ve made in your past that to this
14:20
day you regret and you continuously
14:23
uh castigate yourself for these are
14:26
things that will affect everything in
14:28
your life because our relationship with
14:30
ourselves shapes
14:31
everything our happiness our sense of
14:34
peace how we approach life in general
14:36
our confidence our personal power at
14:39
work in love if you want to learn
14:42
how to build that self-acceptance and
14:45
self-love muscle
14:46
that is the deep work that i do with
14:49
people on my virtual retreat
14:52
