If you want to put them on a rod around 1/4". I used them to attaché Christmas lights to my gutters by drilling a 1/8" hole in the gutter and then attaching the lights to them. They are quit strong for their size.

Probably not. The OUTSIDE dimension across each hook is 1/2" and the INSIDE dimension is about 7/16". For my ceramic mug you would need an inside dimension of at least around 3/4". I would guess you would need a nominal 2" hook.
